some new research/design progress

UPDATE! this week I focused on conducting some more last minute research and actually set up a meeting with the artist Klara to get her thoughts about the project and pick her brain a little bit for some initial research to use to start my design process (i intend to conduct more meetings with her to share what I've been working on as well as to gather more information for the content/text of the book- quotes and images etc). Below are my notes from our meeting:

Initial Meeting with Klara Notes

  • Her inspiration- “answering all of life’s questions”

    • She uses art to investigate these questions

  • She is currently working on small studies and paintings regarding her thoughts

  • Inspired by the fact that we think 60-70,000 thoughts a day- how do we as humans filter through these

    • Why do we feel?

    • How do we feel?

  • Approaches starting a new piece with these questions

    • Starts with intense thinking

    • Sometimes her questions turn into a new painting or thoughts lead to others

  • She believes her motivation to be that she was born to do it

    • Now it is more about making meaningful and authentic work

    • Wants to make  difference

    • Not JUST about technique it’s also about communication

  • She learns from viewers both who appreciate and don’t like her work

    • Wants for them to feel SOMETHING

    • It’s not just beautiful or pretty

    • Testimonial: “Klara captures the emotions, memories, experiences of the collective in art that resonate with individuals”

  • Her practice- as an artist she wants to make good and deep work

    • “My life is my practice” (title inspo for exhibition??)

    • This is her challenge/ the aim

    • Her practice is divided into sections of her life

  • She respects each piece for the way they are set in time- at that moment is when she decides if a piece is done

    • Wants to make sure she does her best work for a piece- to do her idea justice

    • Doesn’t want to limit herself

    • Treating all of her pieces with respect no matter what the outcome

    • *asked if she had favorite piece and couldn’t answer- i might have to choose

  • Inspiration to her: ansel kiefer

    • German painter

    • Analyzing human nature

    • Moving and authentic

    • Explores concepts of good and evil throughout german history

  • Louis bourgeois

    • Deals a lot with her family experience

    • Sculpture and some drawings

  • Picasso- inspired because he was so committed to his work and that related to his success

    • She respects this

    • How much he respected his practice

*received confirmation from Klara that she will be sending high quality images of her work

*she will also share quotes/testimonials from clients she’s worked with about their interpretations and quotes from philosophers

she takes inspo from/poetry she is inspired by

Design progress: I have started collecting a color palette that I think will best suit Klara's work as well as speak to what the
exhibition is about. Below are some of Klara's recent pieces that I love as well as some swatches that I color
matched from her work. She works in a lot of neutrals so I want to stick within earth-tones
(with some bright pops of color to break it up). I also tend to work with a lot of color so this will be a
new experience for me to design effectively within neutrals. I also believe this color palette to be more
relatable and also evokes somewhat of a calming feeling. Below is my moodboard of sorts.

Update plans for the future:
-start doing some branding explorations- type and color palette tests
-begin sketching some logo ideas?
-sketching layout of book also
